News in brief


Three dead in Chinese plague outbreak. 3 people have been killed and 10,000 quarantined in an outbreak of pnuemonic plague in North-West China. WHO says the disease extremely dangerous and can kill within 24 hours.



US journalists pardoned on North Korea after Bill Clinton's visit. The former US President made a surprise visit to the isolated dictatorship, where he negotiated the release of two US journalists and talked about the country's nuclear ambitions.


Tensions heightened in South Ossetia. As the first anniversary of the Georgia/Russia war approaches, Russian troops have been placed on high alert. The Russian foreign ministry says there have been a series of "provocations" and says it's prepared to use force.


Protests against 'indecent clothing' trial in Sudan. Supporters of a female journalist, who is being in tried in Sudan for wearing trousers, demonstrated on the streets of Khartoum. Reports say that police fired teargas at the protestors. Lubna Ahmed Hussein faces 40 lashes but says "Flogging is not pain, flogging is an insult to humans, women and religions."
